Moon Cactus Is Two Plants, Not One — and That Explains Its Short Lifespan
The bright red, orange, or yellow ball on top of a moon cactus isn't a natural, independent plant — it's a chlorophyll-deficient mutant grafted onto a separate green rootstock cactus, usually a hylocereus, because the colourful top can't photosynthesise or survive on its own. This graft explains why moon cactus has a reputation for dying “for no reason” after a year or two: the graft union eventually fails, or the rootstock is rejected or exhausted, and the colourful top that depends entirely on it dies along with it, regardless of watering or light. Understanding this changes what “healthy” actually looks like: a swelling or shrivelling graft point is a far more useful warning sign to watch for than anything happening to the colourful top itself, and it's the one part of the plant most owners never think to check.
