Understanding What Makes Bougainvillea Bloom

Bougainvillea is counter-intuitive. Most gardeners increase watering and feeding to stimulate flowering — with bougainvillea, this is exactly wrong. The plant flowers prolifically in response to stress, specifically drought stress. A slightly water-stressed, root-bound bougainvillea in intense direct sunlight produces the spectacular bracts that define this plant. A comfortable, well-watered bougainvillea in a large pot with rich soil produces primarily leafy green growth and very few flowers. Understanding this principle is the key to spectacular bougainvillea blooms on Indian balconies.

Container Size — Smaller is Better

Bougainvillea actually flowers more prolifically in slightly root-bound containers than in large roomy pots. Start in a 10 to 12-inch pot. As the plant grows, move to a 14 to 16-inch pot — but do not rush to move up in size. A bougainvillea that has filled its current pot with roots, receiving full sun and slight water stress, will produce far more flowers than the same plant in an oversized pot with abundant soil and moisture. Remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches. This October prune is what produces the prolific December to February winter flower display in addition to the summer bloom.
