Cosmos Rewards Poor Soil, Not Rich Soil
Cosmos shares an unusual trait with bougainvillea: it flowers more prolifically in lean, poor soil than in rich, well-fertilised beds, where it instead produces lush foliage and comparatively fewer blooms. This runs against the instinct to feed a flowering annual generously, and over-fertilised cosmos plants are a common, if less recognised, cause of disappointing bloom counts on Indian balconies. Left to its own devices, cosmos also self-seeds readily — spent flowers that are allowed to dry and drop their seed, rather than being deadheaded completely, will often produce a fresh generation of seedlings the following season with no replanting effort at all. Between minimal feeding and letting some flowers go to seed, cosmos is one of the few plants here that genuinely thrives on being left alone rather than closely managed.
