Calendula Isn't a Marigold at All, Despite the Name
Calendula, commonly called pot marigold, is genuinely unrelated to true marigold, Tagetes, covered elsewhere on this site, sharing only a superficial resemblance in flower colour and the coincidental use of “marigold” in both common names. Unlike heat-tolerant true marigold, calendula is a cool-season annual, closer in seasonal preference to snapdragon or petunia than to the marigold it's named alongside, and it tends to decline once Indian summer heat sets in rather than flowering through it. Its petals are also genuinely edible, used to add colour to salads and dishes, a culinary use true marigold generally isn't grown for.
