Caladium Disappears Completely in Cooler Months — More Dramatically Than Alocasia
Caladium grows from a tuber, similar to alocasia and elephant ear, but its seasonal dieback is even more dramatic: the entire plant vanishes above soil in cooler months, leaving what looks like a completely empty pot rather than alocasia's partial thinning, and growers unfamiliar with this cycle very often discard the soil assuming the plant has died outright. Like other aroids on this site, including dieffenbachia and philodendron, it's genuinely toxic if ingested. Its vivid leaf colouring also behaves differently from croton or coleus: several caladium varieties actually intensify their colour in more shade rather than needing brighter light to hold it, the opposite light relationship from those other colourful foliage plants.

| Season | Months | Frequency | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| ☀️ Summer | Mar–Jun | Every 5–7 days | When top 2 inches are dry |

| ❄️ Winter | Dec–Feb | Every 10–14 days | Reduce — growth slows |
🌱 Quick Care Guide
- 🌱 Soil: Indoor potting mix + 20% perlite. Repot every 1–2 years.
- 💧 Water: Let top 2 inches dry before watering. Less in winter.
- ☀️ Sun: Bright indirect light. No harsh direct sun — leaves scorch.
- 🌿 Fertilizer: Balanced liquid feed once/month Mar–Oct. Skip winter.
- ✂️ Wipe: Clean leaves monthly with damp cloth. Improves photosynthesis.
⚠️ Common Problems & Fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Brown leaf tips | Low humidity or fluoride in water | Mist leaves · Use rainwater |
| Yellow leaves | Overwatering | Let soil dry 2 inches before next water |
| Pale, washed-out leaves | Too much direct sun | Move to indirect light |
| Root rot | Overwatering in cool weather | Reduce significantly in winter |
