Lemongrass Is Nearly Indestructible — Except in the Wrong Pot
Lemongrass tolerates drought, poor soil, and inconsistent watering better than almost any herb on this list, which makes its most common cause of death an odd one: an undersized decorative pot. Lemongrass forms a dense, clumping root and stem mass that expands considerably within a single growing season, and the small ornamental pots it's often sold in become root-bound and unable to support the plant within months, long before care mistakes would ever be the limiting factor. The folk belief that a growing lemongrass plant repels mosquitoes is only partly true — the citronella compounds responsible are concentrated in the crushed or distilled leaf, not released meaningfully by an intact, uncrushed plant sitting in a pot. Grown mainly for tea and cooking in Indian households, lemongrass rewards a deep, roomy container far more than any amount of extra feeding or watering.
