Fenugreek â Fast and Nutritious
Fenugreek (Methi, Trigonella foenum-graecum) is one of the fastest and most rewarding leafy greens to grow on an Indian balcony, ready for first harvest within 3 weeks of sowing. Like coriander and spinach, it is a cool-season crop that performs best from October through February in most of India, though it tolerates slightly warmer conditions than coriander.
Sowing Method
Direct sow fenugreek seeds â they germinate readily and the plant does not transplant well. Soak seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination speed. Sow seeds 1cm deep in a wide, shallow container, scattering generously as fenugreek is typically grown densely for leaf production rather than as individual spaced plants. Germination occurs within 4 to 6 days in good conditions, among the fastest of common Indian balcony crops.
Container and Soil
A wide, shallow container works best â 10 to 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep is sufficient since fenugreek has a relatively shallow root system. The ideal soil mix: 40% compost + 30% garden soil + 20% cocopeat + 10% coarse sand. Fenugreek is not particularly demanding about soil fertility, making it one of the easiest crops for beginning Indian balcony gardeners.
Watering and Sunlight
Keep soil consistently moist, watering every 2 days as fenugreek's dense sowing and shallow roots mean the soil dries quickly. It tolerates partial shade, performing adequately with 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight, though full sun produces more robust growth. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, which causes the leaves to become tough and bitter.
Harvesting
Fenugreek can be harvested as microgreens within 10 to 12 days of sowing for a mild, tender green, or allowed to grow to full leaf stage (3 to 4 weeks) for the more robust flavour used in traditional methi dishes. Harvest by cutting the entire plant at soil level when grown densely, or by picking outer leaves if grown with more spacing. For continuous supply, sow a fresh pot every 2 weeks throughout the October to January growing window.
